Ridgewell is determined to keep his place at Villa |
Aston Villa defender Liam Ridgewell has signed a new three-year deal which will keep him at the club until 2009. The 21-year-old has been rewarded for a solid season when he earned a regular place in David O'Leary's first team, starting 33 matches.
"I am delighted to sign my new contract," Ridgewell told the club's website. "Now I'm relishing fighting for my place."
Defender Gary Cahill, 20, followed suit by also signing a new three-year deal.
He joined Villa as a trainee two years ago and made eight appearances for the club last season.
Cahill also made his mark, scoring a spectacular overhead kick during their victory over rivals Birmingham.
Injuries to Martin Laursen, Mark Delaney and Olof Mellberg saw Ridgewell breakthrough but now the England Under-21 international has set his sights on new targets.
"I love scoring goals and will be looking to improve on my tally next season," said Ridgewell, who signed a new contract at Villa Park in October 2005.
"I didn't expect to play so many games last season so I was delighted to get that experience under my belt.
"There is also talk of the gaffer getting someone else in and it is good for the club to have competition for places.
"I must make sure I'm first choice once the campaign gets under way."
