Aston Villa midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger has attracted interest from German side Hamburg. Hitzlsperger, 22, will be out of contract in the summer.
And Hamburg director of football Dietmar Beiersdorfer said: "It would be negligence not to have such a talent on our wish-list."
Hamburg coach Klaus Toppmoller added: "It would be good to have a few German internationals from our side at the 2006 World Cup."
Hitzlsperger made his international debut for Germany in last Saturday's 2-0 win over Iran.
And Villa boss David O'Leary, whose own contract runs out in just under 18 months recently said on Hitslsperger's situation: "The club are pursuing this.
"But, before the agent speaks to us and commits him to anything, Thomas is waiting to see what my future is.
"That is my gut feeling. I think that is the gist of it. The agent was asking me 'how long are you here as Thomas is a big believer in what you are doing?'"
