Hitzlsperger hails O'Leary
Thomas Hitzlsperger
Aston Villa's Thomas Hitzlsperger said he would have been surprised to see boss David O'Leary leave the club to take the Newcastle manager's job.

Rumours suggested O'Leary was in the frame for the post before Graeme Souness was appointed on Monday.

"We've done really well since (O'Leary) came and long may that continue," Hitzlesperger told Villa's website.

"I know he has been linked with the post but, to be honest, I would have been very surprised if he had left."

Hitzlsperger said O'Leary had not finished the job he had come to achieve at Aston Villa.

"We are all happy he's staying at Villa and we're looking to build on last season," he said.

"That is a challenge that clearly excites the manager, so I'm not surprised he is staying."
