Alpay makes Villa U-turn
Villa's Alpay Ozalan tackles Liverpool's El Hadji Diouf
Alpay looked set to leave Villa
Turkey defender Alpay is set to make a U-turn and sign an extended new contract with Aston Villa.

He was placed on the transfer list at his own request after the World Cup.

But Villa boss Graham Taylor has persuaded the 29-years to pledge his future to the Villa Park outfit.

"I like Aston Villa and did not really ever want to leave," Alpay told the Daily Mail newspaper.

"There are one or two things still to discuss but hopefully I will sign a contract in the next week or so."

Alpay, who had been linked with a move to Leeds United, had claimed the club had betrayed him by revealing details about his wage demands and contract negotiations.

Regaining place

He said Villa's actions were designed to turn the fans against him.

Meanwhile, midfielder Steve Stone is hoping Taylor will give him a chance to resurrect his career at Villa.

Stone was told that he could leave Villa at the end of last season and has since made just one first team appearance.

"Throughout my career I've been given contract after contract without having to think about it," he said.

"But then all of a sudden I'm told that I'm not wanted.

"Everyone has to have a goal and mine is to get back in there. I have to put myself in a position so that the manager can pick me," said Stone, who cost 5.5m when he signed from Nottingham Forest four years ago.

"The manager wants to play his own team. It's up to him but I still feel I can bring something to the club. I'm now ready to give it a good shot."
