Wenger's job for life

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger could spend the rest of his career at Highbury, according to the club's vice-chairman.

David Dein said on Tuesday he hoped Wenger would take up a place on the board or a role as technical director after ending his managerial career.

But Dein was quick to point out he had no plans to move the Frenchman upstairs in the near future.

He told BBC Radio Five Live: "It's fairly common knowledge that Arsene's signed an extension to his current contract.

"I think the board will seriously consider, when he's finally ready, inviting him on to the board or becoming technical director because he's a very special guy."

Wenger has ensured unprecedented success for the London club.

The Gunners are currently unbeaten in their last 30 Premiership matches and have been tipped for success in the league, FA Cup and the Champions League.

And Dein believes it is all down to Wenger.

He explained: "He has transformed the club from start to finish: his training ground methods, his dietary controls and the way he's extended players careers.

"He's made average players good, good players very good and very good players world class. And his knowledge of players is exemplary."

Wenger moved to Highbury in September 1996 and has already picked up two league and cup doubles for the team - back in 1998 and last season.

And Dein believes he has more to offer before taking a behind-the-scenes role.

"He's quite happy and comfortable at the club and we're very comfortable with him," added Dein.

"Let's hope he's got a lot more to do on the field first."

Offers elsewhere

In December last year Wenger signed a new four-year contract at the club ending months of speculation he was on the verge of a move elsewhere.

Among the jobs he has been linked with are the position of French national coach or as Alex Ferguson's successor at Manchester United.

Dein, though, remains unfazed by any on-going speculation.

He said: "Any good manager will have offers from elsewhere.

"There's no doubt glamorous clubs in Europe who are underachieving would very much like the services of an Arsene Wenger."
