McGhee unfazed by friendly defeat

McGhee was upbeat despite defeat by Highland League opposition

Aberdeen manager Mark McGhee has said he is happy with his players despite the Scottish Premier League side losing 3-1 to Highland League Fraserburgh.

The Dons fielded six trialists in the pre-season friendly, but several first team regulars were also on display.

However, McGhee was happy with the performance of his players in spite of the poor result.

"We took positives out of the game and I certainly learned a lot about the new boys," McGhee told the club's website.

"All over the park we saw effort. Individually we saw some people have good moments and individually we saw one or two whose 45 minutes were convincing.

"There were two groups of players who have not played together and we had the trialists just in as well.

The score does not reflect the way the game went

"There was no one individually who you can point the finger at and say he did not look at it.

"The goals were disappointing to lose, but they were a little bit unfortunate and the score does not reflect the way the game went.

"But generally speaking we are not going home here worrying that things are not going to get better.

"We are still disappointed not to win the game, but that is something we need to live with and it is not something I am going to dwell on.

"I am looking more closely at the individual performances.

"Learning what the players can do, what the players look like was more important to me, particularly the trialists. For the other lads it was a fitness exercise," he added.

Aberdeen have another pre-season match against Peterhead on Sunday afternoon and McGhee will use this match, and another scheduled for Wednesday night against Dunfermline to further assess the trialists.
