Loss of late goal frustrates Aberdeen boss McGhee

Aberdeen manager Mark McGhee was dejected after losing a late goal in the 1-1 draw away to St Johnstone.

"I thought we deserved to win the game and we're very disappointed not to have," he told BBC Radio Scotland.

"That was a chance to maybe finish above St Johnstone missed, but we'll keep going and try to catch them.

"Coming here as depleted as we were, the players showed a great attitude to try and win the game. Our shape and determination were excellent."

Aberdeen established a half-time lead thanks to a poacher's goal from on-loan striker Steven MacLean, but the home side levelled with a last-minute own goal by Dons goalkeeper Stuart Nelson.

McGhee admitted after the game that there was little chance of MacLean staying on at Pittodrie.

Quizzed about the possibility of a deal being done for the Plymouth striker, McGhee said: "I would think not".

And, when asked if the parties were miles apart on wages, his answer was a straightforward "yes".

Turning his attention back to the draw in Perth, McGhee said: "Sometimes you feel you need a second a goal, but I didn't particularly feel that.

"I thought we were solid enough at the back and we were never really threatened, although St Johnstone have a physical presence.

"I thought that we dealt with that, especially considering the players we had missing."
