Kyle and MacLean unlikely signings for Aberdeen

Aberdeen look likely to miss out on signing Kilmarnock striker Kevin Kyle and on-loan Plymouth Argyle forward Steven MacLean.

Dons manager Mark McGhee had hoped to team the pair up as his new strike force next season.

But he could face competition for Kyle, who is out of contract in the summer, from Hearts and clubs in England.

And, although MacLean is likely to be released by Plymouth, he is poised to remain in English football.

McGhee had been keen to permanently sign MacLean, who has scored four goals for Aberdeen since arriving in January.

The 27-year-old is poised to be released from his Home Park contract, which has a year left to run.

However, a move to another English club is his preference, with the Pittodrie club unable to get near the forward's reported £6,000-per-week salary.

Meanwhile, McGhee will be without suspended defender Charlie Mulgrew for Saturday's trip to face St Johnstone in Perth, where a point would guarantee their safety from relegation.

Striker Darren Mackie is available but will be banned for next Saturday's visit by Hamilton Accies.
