Kerr completes Pittodrie switch

Mark Kerr

Aberdeen have completed the signing of Mark Kerr after the former Dundee United midfielder passed a medical.

Kerr, who began his career at Falkirk before moving to United in 2003, has signed a two-year contract and trained with his new team-mates on Monday.

The 26-year-old agreed terms with Jimmy Calderwood's side last week after five years at Tannadice.

He will add experience to the Pittodrie side after several senior players left at the end of last season.

English Championship side Preston signed Dons midfielder Barry Nicholson on a two-year deal on a Bosman free transfer while defender Karim Touzani has also recently left the club to join Sparta Rotterdam.

Kerr, who has been given Nicholson's number eight jersey, joins Gary McDonald, Bertrand Bossu and Sam Stewart as Calderwood's other close season captures.

"I'm looking forward to my time here, I've fitted in already and hopefully it continues the way that it has started," said Kerr.

"There's a big fanbase here, a good stadium and speaking to the gaffer everything was positive.

"I just feel this is a step in the right direction."

The Dons boss was effusive in his praise of Kerr as he predicted big things from the midfielder.

"Mark had offers from England, luckily enough he chose Aberdeen, and I'm sure he'll be a big success here.

"He's tactically very aware and played in a very good Dundee Utd midfield, with wonderful attacking players and he defended to allow them to attack.

"He's technically very good, a wonderful athlete and, from all reports, he's a wonderful lad in the dressing room.

The Aberdeen manager went on to reveal his frustrations at the financial restrictions hampering his attempts to bring in new players

"We need about four or five in, but we're still working on it," he said.

"It's frustrating, as you want the players in for the first day of training, but other managers are in the same boat.

"That's the way it is in Scottish football and we've just got to get on with it.

"We go down to see players in England and you think you see a player and then you see what wages they're on and you've no chance.

"Even players in the Conference are on very good money and it makes things difficult for us in Scotland.

"The good thing is there's always players who want to come to Aberdeen, and if they don't it's usually down to finances," added Calderwood.
