Under-strength Kilmarnock finished the season with a flourish with victory secured by a fine Mehdi Taouil goal.

Killie boss Jim Jefferies made seven changes, left out in-form striker Kevin Kyle and lost three players to head knocks during the game against Well.

But Danny Invincibile fired the visitors into the lead from 12 yards after 27 minutes at Fir Park.

Brian McLean equalised from close range, but Taouil teased the Well defence before firing home.

Victory ensured that Kilmarnock finish eighth, one place below Motherwell.

On-loan Birmingham goalkeeper Artur Krysiak had been handed his Motherwell debut, with Graeme Smith, who has yet to agree a new contact along with Stephen Hughes, on the bench.

Stevie Hammell and John Sutton were given starts, but Mark Reynolds was absent despite being available after suspension.

Kilmarnock brought in Iain Flannigan and left out several players who would be at risk of picking up a suspension for next season.

Kevin Kyle was among those dropping out after scoring seven goals in four games to keep Killie in the SPL, despite playing through injury.

And Killie had to make another change after just 12 minutes when Grant Murray went off with a head knock after clashing with team-mate Manuel Pascali, and was replaced by Gavin Skelton.

Sheridan should have tested young Killie goalkeeper Cameron Bell in the 18th minute but shot well over from 16 yards after being set up by David Clarkson.

Pascali followed Murray into the dressing-room after 20 minutes, with James Fowler coming on.

But the visitors took the lead seven minutes later on the counter attack as Taouil fed the unmarked Invincibile to power home from 12 yards.

The only time Motherwell threatened an equaliser before the break was when Clarkson headed Hammell's near-post corner across the face of goal.

It was Motherwell's turn to lose a player to injury, on-loan Maros Klimpl being replaced by Bob Malcolm.

Well came close to an equaliser when defender Brian McLean sent a header against the crossbar.

Killie's defence was further disrupted when yet another head knock forced David Lilley to be replaced with Ryan O'Leary.

Sheridan squandered a chance, firing wide as Well applied more pressure, and was denied by a good save at his feet by goalkeeper Bell.

And the on-loan Celtic striker was just beaten to the ball by defender McLean when Well did find the net 10 minutes from the end after good work from Clarkson.

However, in the dying seconds, David Fernandez set up Taouil with a fine roll-back and flick before the midfielder performed a couple of step-overs and scored from a tight angle via a deflection.

Motherwell manager Mark McGhee:
"The result was not relevant. I think it was an end of season game.

"There were a couple of individual performances in our team that were terrific.

"The way he was moving, David Clarkson is going to be an exciting player player for us next season.

"I thought Clarkson and Jim O'Brien in particular were excellent, Stephen Hughes got on the ball and made things tick, while Paul Quinn was at times rampaging and looked a good player."

Kilmarnock manager Jim Jefferies:
"I thought David Fernandez was exceptional. That great bit of skill to open up the chance for Mehdi, who then produced phenomenal skill to score.

"What a way to send the supporters away for the summer.

"They started better than us, but I thought we were comfortable after the first goal."
