Gareth Bale was named Welsh player of the year last week

Ashley Williams believes Switzerland will target Gareth Bale, but he says the Tottenham winger can still star for Wales in Tuesday's Euro 2012 qualifier.

The Wales captain is expecting Ottmar Hitzfeld's Swiss side to dominate large parts of the game as both sides search for their first points of the campaign.

But Williams, who is hoping to shrug off an ankle injury, says that can let Welsh Player of the Year Bale in.

"Everyone knows how good a player he is," said the Swansea City defender.

"He's probably going to find it tough when he plays for Wales especially if we don't have Craig Bellamy and Aaron Ramsey playing.

"He's our biggest attacking threat and teams are going to pay special attention to him.

"But I think he's a good enough player to deal with that.

"They will have a lot of the ball and hopefully we can get it to him on the break and let him do his stuff.

"I think he really gave it a go against Bulgaria, he did make things happen, and if he plays in an advanced role, that's the way he plays."

Wales have lost their opening two games in Group G and another defeat in Basle on Tuesday would all but end their campaign just a month after it began.

The 1-0 defeat in Montenegro last month ended John Toshack's six-year reign as manager and Brian Flynn, who has impressed in charge of Wales Under-21s, was asked to oversee the senior side.

A 1-0 home defeat to Bulgaria on Friday was an inauspicious start for Flynn if he is to persuade Football Association of Wales to give him the job permanently.

Now Wales go to Switzerland hoping to avoid losing their opening three qualifiers - an unwanted feat a Welsh team has not suffered since the 1970 World Cup qualifying campaign.

But despite their poor start, Williams insists Wales will keep going.

"We're only two games in and at the end of the day we're going to go and try and pick up as many points as possible and see where we finish up," he said.

"We definitely don't think it's over. We've not had the start we wanted but as soon as we get on the board we can look forward and really try and really push on in the group.

"Switzerland are a good team, we're definitely going there to win, not trying to sit back and take a draw.

"Hopefully we'll be sitting here after the game with the points and a good performance."

And Blackpool midfielder David Vaughan says the Wales players will also be fighting for Flynn's job.

"No one wants to let him [Flynn] down and hopefully he will get the job, regardless of the results, if we play well," said Vaughan.

"Hopefully we can do the job for him. We have only had a few days' training with him but if he is around long term I think you will see the benefits in the performances."

Wales will be without 12 players for the game against a Switzerland side who qualified for the World Cup in South Africa but like Wales have lost their first two Euro 2012 qualifiers.
