"I thought the longer the game went on, I could see us getting a result. It was hard work of course but I thought they did very, very well," said Toshack.

"I'm proud of them. You're going to be put under pressure in places like this because Germany are a top side.

"But considering the players we were missing, I thought they did well and I'm pleased for all of them."

Toshack's side created few clear-cut opportunities in Frankfurt, but they managed to repel Germany's attacks without too many problems as Danny Gabbidon and James Collins produced outstanding displays.

Despite claiming an unlikely point, Wales dropped a place to finish in fifth place in Euro 2008 qualifying Group 10 after Slovakia leaped over them by beating San Marino.

The draw came three days after the home with the Republic of Ireland, and Toshack said these final two results ensured Wales can feel satisfied with their 12-game campaign.

"We've lost a lot of key players along the way, and a lot of younger ones came in over the campaign," Toshack added.

"We had four poor performances - Cyprus away, Republic of Ireland away, Germany home and Slovakia home.

"But we had eight performances we can be pleased with. Eight out of 12 is 66% and that's a pass."

Simon Davies, captain in the absence of Craig Bellamy, paid tribute to the courage of the Wales defenders as they put their bodies on the line to block late German efforts.

He said: "We knew at half time we were only halfway there and we would do well to come out and play as well as we did in the first half.

"We defended really well, the lads at the back pulled off some great last-minute challenges.

"It's great to finish the campaign with a positive. We've got to carry that on now - we've talked about the young squad coming together and the potential we might have.
