New Port Talbot Town manager Tony Pennock is set to play for Welsh Premier rivals The New Saints in their Champions League first-leg qualifier.

Saints goalkeeper Gerard Doherty is currently injured but Saints boss Ken McKenna has moved to solve the crisis.

But Pennock, who is also the Swansea City goalkeeping coach, will be drafted in to face Latvian side Ventspils.

Former Cardiff City goalkeeper Scott Allison has also been registered by the Saints this week.

Veteran Wales goalkeeper Paul Jones had been approached but was unwilling to be cup-tied as he seeks a new club.

The first leg of the first qualifying round will be played at Newtown's Latham Park on 17 July, with Sainst hoping Doherty will be fit for the return on 25 July back in Latvia.

Pennock, 36, is also the Wales semi-professional manager, having been appointed in January, and also works as the Football in the Community officer for Swansea Council.

Meanwhile, Lee John has left Port Talbot to join Conference South club Newport County, the midfielder joining on a two-year contract for an undisclosed fee.
