Paul Jones is looking for a new club after being released by QPR |
Wales veteran goalkeeper Paul Jones has turned down an audacious bid to join Welsh Premiership side The New Saints for their Champions League campaign. Saints face Latvian side Ventspils in the first qualifying round, first leg at Newtown's Latham Park on 17 July.
"Ken McKenna (the Saints manager) asked me to play because their keeper is struggling with injury," Jones said.
"I have turned it down because there's interest from other clubs involved in the Uefa Cup or Champions League."
Saints keeper Gerard Doherty is currently injured and the Welsh champions had to borrow John Bagnall on loan from Southport for their pre-season tour in Ireland.

Doherty has been suffering from stomach and groin strains while striker Alfie Carter (knee) is also an injury doubt for the European campaign.
Should Saints overcome Ventspils they will face Red Bull Salzburg in the second qualifying round.
Jones, who has won 50 caps for Wales, was released by Queen's Park Rangers in May and is currently searching for a new club.
The 40-year-old told BBC Sport Wales he cannot afford to be cup-tied as several of the clubs he is in contact with are Premier League sides.
Jones would be registered as a player - likely to be as reserve or third-choice keeper - but could also be employed in a coaching capacity.
"We'll wait and see what happens but often clubs leave keepers until the last thing, especially ones in Europe (competition)," Jones added.
Cardiff City are currently in search of a goalkeeper but Jones said there has been no interest from the Championship club, despite manager Dave Jones having signed him three times before.
"There's been no contact with Cardiff, perhaps Dave has had enough of me!" Jones joked.
The Bluebirds boss signed Jones when he was in charge of Stockport, Southampton, and then Wolverhampton Wanderers.
