 | FAW PREMIER CUP FINAL |
Wrexham manager Denis Smith admitted after his side's 2-1 FAW Premier Cup final loss to Swansea that he faces a battle to keep his squad together.
The in-administration Dragons have been relegated to League Two after being docked 10 points and face an uncertain future as they hope for a takeover.
"I have to convince players this is a club to be at," Smith told BBC Sport.
"Anyone can outbid us, but Wrexham's a great area, there are nice people, good facilities and we play the right way."
To rub salt into the wounds, former Wrexham striker Lee Trundle was the man who sparked Swansea's comeback in the final game at the Vetch before the ground's demolition.
"We have been easy pickings for three years, you can see that with Trundle," said Smith.
"The game summed up the season for both teams. Swansea have had a good one and that was the icing on the cake for them."
Smith is waiting to hear from long-serving defender Stephen Roberts about his future. Doncaster claim to be on the point of signing him, but Smith says the player said nothing about a move on Tuesday and that it would surprise him.
The defeat loosened Wrexham's two-year hold on the trophy and prevented them becoming champions for the sixth time.
It also meant they missed out on a much needed 100,000 winner's prize, although they received 50,000 as runners-up. "I'm gutted to be honest," admitted Smith. "I like the trophy and wanted to keep it.
"We've got a civic reception on Saturday and I wanted to take along this trophy as well as the LDV Vans cup.
"I feel that the better team lost, but that's been the story of our season, going ahead, battering teams then losing.
"[Wrexham keeper] Ben Foster had nothing to do all night - I could have played in goal and the result would have been the same.
"We have to keep passing the ball, but after we went ahead we sat back on them.
"You have to wonder if we get nervous when we go ahead and have forgotten how to win. That's worrying."
