Bangor lost both legs of the tie |
Nine-man Bangor City crashed out of the Intertoto Cup in the first round in a heavy second-leg defeat in Romania. The Welsh Premier side had been hoping to reverse a one goal deficit when they faced Romanian side Gloria Bistrita on Saturday.
And they got a perfect start when Ricky Evans drilled home a 30-yard free kick after 16 minutes.
But Gloria, who also had two players sent off, levelled through Adrian Anca before the break.
In the second half, Romanian international Lucian Sanmartean and Sergiu Mindrean put the tie beyond Bangor.
Bangor defender Alan Goodall was then sent off, with just 10 minutes remaining, for a challenge on Vasile Popa.
In a frenetic finale to the match, Sanmartean netted his second, before substitute Ciprian Bucuroaia grabbed Gloria's fifth.
Bangor striker Ross Jefferies and two Gloria players were then sent off for violent conduct.
But there was still time for Evans to score a consolation penalty for the visitors in injury time.
Italian job
Club secretary Alun Griffiths said manager Peter Davenport was disappointed with the defeat.
"But in the end, I think we were beaten by a better team over the two legs," said Griffiths.
The Transylvanian team will go on to face Italian Serie A team Brescia in the next round.
Bangor were only able to fulfil their mission to northern Romania for the return leg after chairman Ken Jones stumped up 20,000 to cover travelling costs.
The team had a long flight to Bucharest and a bus journey to the ground.
The club had qualified for the Intertoto Cup by finishing third in the Welsh Premier league last season.
