Newry City draw 0-0 with Glentoran at the Newry Showgrounds

Glentoran lost their 100 per cent record in the Carling Premiership as they were held by a dogged Newry City.

Conor Downey went close for Newry but the Glens bossed the rest of the first half with Ciaran Martyn hitting a post.

Glens keeper Elliott Morris denied Andy Graham but Matt Hazley and Gerard Rowe cleared Neal Gawley and Jamie McGovern efforts off the line.

Late on, Andy Waterworth seemed certain to score before being denied by Newry keeper Nathan Morley-Hillen.

Downey fired just wide for Newry in the second minute after good work by Gerard Rowe.

Glentoran then had a penalty shout after Waterworth went down following a Ross Black challenge but the appeals were ignored.

The Glens dominated the remainder of the opening half without managing to break the deadlock.

Shane McCabe fired just wide in the 22nd minute and Ciaran Martyn then saw a shot cleared off the line by Black after Newry keeper Morley-Hillen had dropped a cross.

On the stroke of half-time, Martyn hit the woodwork with a pile-driver as the Newry goal continued to have a charmed life.

Newry improved in the second half and Morris had to react smartly to save Graham's effort.

However, the home side had Hazley and Rowe to thank in the 59th minute as they cleared successive efforts from Gawley and McGovern off the line.

Newry then suffered a blow when the injury-plagued Downey was forced off with an apparent hamstring injury.

Waterworth had the best chance of the match eight minutes when he only had Morley-Hillen to beat but the Newry keeper made a brave save.
