Steffen Iversen holds off the challenge of Robert Garrett

Linfield went out to Rosenborg in the second qualifying round of the Champions League despite a battling second-leg performance in Trondheim.

The Irish League champions created chances in the first half but failed to convert and Rade Prica made it 1-0 with a backpost header in the 32nd minute.

Both sides had scoring opportunities in the second half but Markus Henriksen sidefooted in the second on 86 minutes.

The Norwegian side will play Swedish outfit AIK Solna in the next round.

Philip Lowry had a penalty appeal turned down early in the game and the midfielder then fired a right-foot deflected shot slightly wide.

Prica headed wide from a Steffen Iversen cross after being left unmarked and then Henriksen was just off-target with a long-range drive.

Brian McCaul went on a mazy run but shot just wide on the half hour but Prica opened the scoring two minutes later.

Alan Blayney saved a low shot from Henriksen and just before the break, Morten Moldskred sidefooted wide when he should have scored.

One minute after the break, Peter Thompson drilled a curling right-foot shot inches wide and soon after, Aaron Burns headed over from a corner as the Blues pressed for an equaliser.

Per Ciljan Skjelbred fired wide and then Blayney made fine saves from an Anthony Annan drive and a Prica downward header.

Mikael Lustig saw an effort cleared off the line by Robert Garrett and then Blayney pushed an Annan effort round the post.

Henriksen scored the second into the top corner with four minutes remaining as the visitors tired near the end.
