Kevin Deery turned down an offer from Shamrock Rovers

Midfielder Kevin Deery has re-signed for Derry City on a one-year contract, with the option of a further year.

Deery opted to stay at the Brandywell despite attracting interest from a number of other clubs, including Premier Division side Shamrock Rovers.

"I've gone with my instinct and decided to stay for personal reasons, plus I'm confident we'll be promoted. There's still a buzz at the club," said Deery.

Meanwhile Barry Molloy has gone on a one-week trial with Bristol Rovers.

Molloy has not ruled out re-signing for Derry but says he is keen to explore his options of playing at a higher level.

"It was too good an opportunity to turn down and it would be a decent move for me if I can pull it off," said Molloy.

"I am not ruling out staying at Derry but if I can play at a higher level, that's a better option," he added.

Deery said manager Stephen Kenny's decision to stay at the club had influenced him to follow suit.

"Stephen has managed in the First Division so he knows what it's all about," said Deery.

"I'm totally confident that we'll go up as there are good people behind the club and there is a bit of life about the place.

"It was always my ambition to go across the water but it hasn't happened and I'm getting a bit too old to go on trial."

The signing of Deery will come as a boost to the Candystripes following Peter Hutton's departure to Cliftonville and the imminent departure of Gareth McGlynn, Steven Gray and Ruaidhri Higgins to Bohemians.
