Pressure mounts on IFA president Raymond Kennedy

Raymond Kennedy
Kennedy says he has delivered considerable cash for the IFA

Pressure is mounting on Irish Football Association president Raymond Kennedy following a meeting of the IFA Council in Belfast on Monday night.

Kennedy faced questioning over a recent payout to former chief executive Howard Wells who took an unfair dismissal case after being sacked in October 2008.

The out-of-court settlement is believed to have cost the IFA around £400,000.

Much of the questioning centred around whether Kennedy had heeded or rejected legal advice when dismissing Wells.

Kennedy cited confidentiality clauses in refusing to answer questions about the payment to Wells.

There is increasing speculation that the positions of Kennedy and IFA vice-president David Martin have become untenable.

The Council will meet again in the first week of February.
