Newry beat Glentoran in the league for the first time in 10 years
Champions Glentoran were knocked off the top of the Carling Premiership after losing to Newry for the first time in the league for 10 years.
Stephen Garrett got the winner with a 59th-minute penalty which was awarded for Colin Nixon's foul on Ross Black.
Early on, Newry keeper Neil Gallagher prevented an own goal the ball had come off defender David Munster.
Gary Hamilton failed to make the most of a chance while sub Andrew Waterworth saw an effort saved by Gallagher.
Glentoran slip down to second place, a point behind new leaders Crusaders.
Newry manager John McDonnell was relieved to enjoy a change of luck against the Glens.
"I am delighted for the lads because they have had so many disappointments," he said.
"We defended and kept our shape well and Stevie stuck the penalty away well for us.
"Christmas is an important time and we have Institute and Dungannon coming up in the next couple of weeks and hopefully we can pick up more points.
"It is no good getting three points away to Glentoran if we do not build on that."
