Thomas Stewart said he believed his move to Derry City on a two and a half year contract would help him develop and improve his game.
"I had talks with Stephen Kenny and he made everything clear and I believe he will help me develop as a player.
"The Eircom League is a high standard, I am ambitious and it will help me improve my game. I think I can add something to the Derry City team.
"Football is about challenges and I hope to work myself into the team."
Candystripes manager Stephen Kenny said the signing of Stewart would "increase our attacking options".
"Thomas is a mature lad and we are delighted to get him," said Kenny.
"He always played well for Linfield against us, he can score goals and take people on and he is inventive and creative," enthused the Derry boss.
