Rory Hamill celebrates the win with DC team-mate Tony Heagney |
Donegal Celtic manager Paddy Kelly has revealed that it was left up to Rory Hamill to decide if he wanted to play against Glentoran in the Irish Cup. Hamill, who is on loan from the Glens, scored both goals as DC knocked them out in the quarter-final at the Oval.
"There was a verbal agreement between the two managers that he would not play in our league meeting," said Kelly.
"But it was left Rory and Alan McDonald to decide about the cup game and Alan allowed Rory to make the call."
Hamill described playing against Glentoran as a "crazy experience".
"It was a bizarre day, the whole occasion for me," he said.
"I went to Donegal Celtic until the end of the season because I was frustrated about not getting 90 minutes each week at Glentoran.
"There was a gentlemen's agreement with Alan that I could play in Irish Cup matches.
"But we did not know then that the two teams would be paired together in the quarter-finals.
"I want to give credit to the Glentoran supporters because they were welcoming to me when I arrived.
"There was not any hostility and that pleased me.
"It feels bad knocking your own team out of the Irish Cup - I always want Glentoran to do well.
"But on this occasion I was honouring the contract I had signed at Donegal Celtic."
