Paul Murphy saved from Mark McAllister and Johnny Flynn's header from Stephen Lowry's free-kick was well saved by Dwayne Nelson before the break.
Scates skewed the ball wide, Murphy saved from McGinn, Lowry shot at Nelson and Rodney McAree went close late on.
McAree's goalbound free-kick hit defender Flynn.
Lowry was the United dangerman throughout and his dangerous early cross failed to find a Ballymena team-mate.
