Ballymena United lost and failed to score for the third league game in a row as Cliftonville's Barry Holland scored a 61st-minute winner. Holland, whose missed penalty saw the Reds lose in the CIS Cup shoot-out against Newry in midweek, netted from close in following a corner.
Earlier Ronan Scannell had a shot saved by United keeper Paul Murphy.
Cliftonville are up to third but are level on poiints with the top two Linfdield and Glentoran
Mark Picking had a shot blocked for Ballymena who stay in 13th place with three points from four matches.
"That Newry result was a setback for us and it was important we got this win," said Cliftonville midfielder Barry Johnston.
"Ballymena really put it up to us. People talk about our fancy football but we proved we can battle as well."
