Peter Thompson executed a perfectly timed run and beat David Miskelly for Linfield's 24th-minute winning goal in a disappointing game at Windsor Park. Tim Mouncey had an early effort disallowed, Miskelly saved a first-time Glenn Ferguson shot and, at the other end, Alan Mannus denied Marc McCann.
Mouncey was just wide with a second half attempt while Gary McCutcheon was wide with a free-kick for the Ports.
The Ports were missing a number of players through injury and suspension.
