Roy Walker guided Crusaders to two league championships

Walker, who has had spells in charge of Crusaders and Glenavon, succeeds Paul Millar who was sacked by the Glens after 16 months.

Former Cardiff City and Port Vale forward Millar was axed despite steering the east Belfast club to runners-up spot in the Premier League.

The move sees Walker return to the game seven years after quitting at Glenavon.

"Glentoran were my boyhood team and are probably the only club which could have attracted me back," said Walker.

"I think it is fair to say there is some rebuilding work to be done with the team but there is a nucleus of players there to provide a foundation to build upon."

Former Cardiff City and Port Vale forward Millar got the job in February 2006 after Walker turned down the chance to take over from Roy Coyle.

Glentoran finished the Premier Division campaign eight points behind fierce Belfast rivals Linfield despite being five points ahead at Christmas.

That cost Millar his job even though the Glens had won the CIS League Cup earlier in the season.

Walker guided Crusaders to Irish League titles in 1995 and 1997. Since leaving management he was a match analyst with BBC Radio Ulster.
