The Irish FA will launch an inquiry into the Padraig Gollogley registration affair as soon as it receives an official complaint from a senior club. IFA chiefs are expecting a request to look into whether the former Newry defender had the required international clearance to play for Larne.
Larne are adamant they possess written IFA confirmation that Gollogley was eligible to play for them.
But if the case goes against them they could lose points and be relegated.
Larne play their last match of the league campaign this Saturday needing victory to definitely avoid the promotion/relegation play-off with First Division runners-up Bangor.
Since leaving Newry, Gollogley played for Dromin, a junior side in the Republic of Ireland.
He would have required international clearance to return to playing for a club in Northern Ireland.
"We cannot do anything until we receive an official request," said an IFA official.
"We are anticipating this happening and, as soon as it does, competition services will investigate."
