Allan Smart and Marc McCann scored as Portadown claimed victory at the Marshes on Saturday afternoon. Smart poked the ball in with a left foot shot from a cross by Keith O'Hara on eight minutes while Gary McCutcheon twice went close to adding another.
Lee Feeney and Stephen Ferguson failed to hit the target for Newry in the second half and Marc McCann surged through and fired in a shot after 88.
Portadown are now fourth, ahead of Cliftonville on goal difference.
