Derry City beat Cork City 1-0 at the Brandywell on Friday night but lost out to Shelbourne in the Eircom League title race on goal difference. Mark Farren rounded the goalkeeper and netted the winning goal on 11 minutes.
At Tolka Park Shels conceded a 15th minute goal with a Steve Williams own goal but Stuart Byrne equalised with a penalty after 23 minutes.
Glen Crowe fired in Jason Byrne's cross on 29 minutes to make it 2-1 and land his side's third title in four years.
Richie Baker was sent-off with a minute remaining but the dismissal did not sour the celebrations for Pat Fenlon's side.
Derry boss Stephen Kenny said he was disappointed to lose out on goal difference but was full of praise for his players.
"What the players have achieved this season is incredible and the support has been amazing all season.
"It has been a wonderful journey," said the Candystripes manager, who leaves to take over at Scottish Premier side Dunfermline.
