Kenny wary of Gretna experience
Derry boss Stephen Kenny
Kenny's side are in fine form in their domestic league

Uefa Cup
2nd qualifying round, 1st leg

Stephen Kenny has played down suggestions that his Derry City side ought to dispose easily of Gretna having already beaten IFK Gothenburg.

"Gothenburg have won the Uefa Cup twice and had several players who played in the World Cup," said the Derry boss ahead of Thursday's Uefa Cup tie.

"To beat them home and away was more than we could have envisaged.

"But that was an isolated result. It was a tactical battle, but both teams will be going out to win this game."

Kenny watched Gretna hammer Hamilton Academical 6-0 at the weekend before taking his side to Motherwell for the first leg of their second qualifying round tie.

"It was a great achievement for them to get to the Scottish Cup final last season," he said.
Beating Gothenburg has given the players, the club and the whole city a lift

Derry City manager Stephen Kenny

"They are the seeded team and won the Second Division by 18 points last season.

"And they have players who have been playing full-time all their lives and have experience of the Scottish Premier League.

"I think most people in Scotland will fancy Gretna, while in Northern Ireland people know less about them and will fancy us."

Derry emerged as a major force in the Republic of Ireland last season, finishing second.

They sit second again this term after 15 games but will overtake holder Shelbourne should they win their game in hand.

"Beating Gothenburg has given the players, the club and the whole city a lift," added Kenny.

"It's culminated in us taking more than 2,000 fans to Motherwell, which should help inspire our players.

"The anticipation in the city is great and there is a unique relationship between the players and the supporters as so many of our squad were brought up near the Brandywell.

"Gretna are well capable of scoring goals and so are we, but our aim will be to find the net over there.

"It is great to be involved in high-profile games like Uefa Cup ties and we know we are capable of doing ourselves justice and getting a good result in Scotland.

"We have a young emerging side, a lot of our players are fearless and we have confidence in ourselves so hopefully we can win the tie."
