Colin Nixon was injured after 24 minutes |
Glentoran defender Colin Nixon has been told that he fractured his back in two places in the Irish Cup final defeat by Linfield earlier this month. Nixon sustained the injury in a collision with Linfield goalkeeper Alan Mannus after 24 minutes of the decider but played out the rest of the match.
Initial x-rays after the incident detected nothing but continuing pain forced him to seek a second opinion.
Nixon may miss the start of the season, including the Glens' European opener.
The defender, who acted as skipper in the absence of Paul Leeman, is aiming to play a part in pre-season training but says it is difficult to know how long he will be out for.
"I have no idea when I'll be back but it is nothing that won't heal and I have been ordered to rest.
"The pain just got worse after the final and I knew something was wrong," he said.
