Mark Farren scored Derry's goal in 1-1 draw with Glentoran |
Derry City and Glentoran drew 1-1 in Tuesday's historic friendly match with Mark Farren scoring for City and Mark Glendinning getting the equaliser. Irish League club Glentoran were making their first visit to Derry since 1969, before City left the northern set-up and later joined the League of Ireland.
The game was in memory of Mrs Olive Parkhouse, mother of Glentoran player Stephen Parkhouse.
The family are from Derry and the proceeds went to the Foyle Hospice.
Stephen, who joined the Glens in July 2004, said his family was grateful to the clubs for arranging the fixture.
"To play this game in our mother's memory is a great honour. The Foyle Hospice is a very special local charity," he said.
Derry were on top in the early stages of the game, played in front of an estimated crowd of 1,500.
Farren scored on 24 minutes after Glens keeper Elliott Morris had parried out a shot by Gary Beckett.
Ten minutes later Morris turned a Kevin Deery free-kick away for a corner.
There was more urgency in Glentoran's second half display and a Darren Lockhart shot struck a post after a Colin Nixon free-kick on 67 minutes
Then Glendinning drove in the 75th minute equaliser from close-range after a free-kick had been flicked on.
