David Jeffrey is set to bring his Linfield team to the Brandywell |
Linfield could be set for a return to the Brandywell next month for the first time in over 30 years. Derry City have invited the south Belfast outfit to play a friendly game which would be the clubs' first match at the venue in over 30 years.
The Candystripes returned to Windsor Park for a recent testimonial game for former Linfield player John Easton.
Security could be a concern ahead of the match as the Brandywell doesn't have a police presence during games.
Linfield have not played at the Brandywell since Derry City left the Irish League in 1972.
Derry want the game to take place in late November, after the conclusion of the Eircom League season although Linfield have yet to confirm a date because of their Irish League commitments.
Linfield will play Eircom League opposition in the new cross-border Setanta Cup after the end of the current Daily Mirror Irish League season.
Blues boss David Jeffrey said he would be delighted to bring his team to the Brandywell.
"I can't really see that there would be a problem," he said.
"People forget that we played Derry in a testimonial game for John Easton not long ago and it was a great evening.
"I appreciate that some people might have misgivings about us going down the Brandywell but I think times have moved on."
When questioned about the policing issue, Jeffrey pointed out that the PSNI now encourages Irish League clubs to provide stewarding for many games.
"The Police have put a lot of pressure on clubs to have their own stewards and lots of games are marshalled without the police having to be present."
