Mark Farren scored Derry's winner against Bohemians |
Mark Farren was the Derry City matchwinner for the second successive match as the Candystripes beat Bohemians at Dalymount Park. It was a sweet success for Derry manager Stephen Kenny who had been sacked as Bohs boss back in August.
Kenny saw his new club make it five games unbeaten in the league, a run which has ended any chance of them getting sucked into relegation danger.
Farren avoided the Bohs offside trap on 16 minutes to score the only goal.
The 22-year-old had been played in by Gary Beckett before avoiding onrushing goalkeeper Matt Gregg to finish right-footed into an empty net.
Two minutes earlier Derry keeper David Forde had reacted smartly to deny James Keddy, in what was one of only two Bohs chances in the first half.
Forde dropped a high ball on 43 minutes but Glen Crowe's finish was off target.
Farren, who netted the winner against Drogheda last time out, should have made it two midway through the half.
Having been released down the right hand side, the young Derry striker's looping shot hit Gregg's right post with the keeper beaten.
The home side did have the better of the chances in the second half with defender Paul McNally heading narrowly over from Simon Webb's late corner, and Tony Grant's desperate slide just missing connection with Foley's cross.
With Eamonn Doherty, Mark McChrystal and Alan Murphy coming on for Derry, the visitors held on for a precious 10th win of the season - and a third win in four games.
Kenny's side welcome Cork City to the Brandywell next Tuesday, four points behind fifth-placed Waterford.
