Wylie steps down after his position is undermined at Mourneview |
Alfie Wylie has stepped down as Glenavon manager because of frustrations at Mourneview Park. Wylie was also extremely upset when he found that Glenavon had approached another Irish League manager to take over the reins at Lurgan.
It was a massive decision for Wylie, who was always a fan of the Mid Ulster club.
He felt that the Mourneview board had not given him backing in the transfer market to strengthen the side.
Glenavon have not tasted victory in their last eight Irish League games and are lying bottom five points adrift of Cliftonville.
Wylie had attempted to bring Garry Haylock back to the province, and tried to sign Ballymena's Nigel Jemson.
However, both moves were blocked. But it was when he heard that his position was being threatened behind his back, that he decided to step down.
Glenavon Football Club reluctantly announced that Wylie had departed.
''The Board of Directors appreciates the amount of time and effort Alfie has put into his role and wishes to place on record its thanks to him for his service to the club,'' said a statement.
Glenavon will make a further statement after Board meeting on Wednesday.
Wylie could now take a break from the game, although he has been linked as a possible assistant to Roy McCreadie at Newry Town where he was once manager.
