Derry City boss Kevin Mahon will have some pressure eased |
Derry City collected their first points of the season with a deserved victory over fellow Eircom League strugglers UCD at the Brandywell. The all-important goal was scored by second-half substitute Ciaran Martyn who found the target in the 64th minute.
The victory will ease the worries of Candystripes boss Kevin Mahon who was under pressure after four straight Premiership defeats.
After an even first half, Derry took the game to the students on the resumption.
Derry had a couple of chances before they hit the target.
Following good work by Gareth McGlynn Gary Beckett brought a fine save from atrick Jennings, son of the former Northern Ireland goalkeeper.
From the resulting corner Martin fired just wide after Sean Hargan put him in possession.
The all-important goal came from a Sean Friars free-kick which Jennings could only touch onto the crossbar and Martyn fired in the rebound.
UCD nearly grabbed an equaliser five minutes later but John Martin missed a glorious chance at the far post.
Confidence soared in the Derry camp as they pushed the ball around with full control to run out victors.
