| Monday, 4 November, 2002, 17:40 GMT Hughes keeps faith ![]() Hughes has kept faith with the side that beat Italy Mark Hughes has announced an unchanged squad for Wales' crunch European Championship 2004 qualifier in Azerbaijan. It is the third game in a row that the Wales manager has been able to keep a settled side, who will look to build on their impressive 2-1 win over Italy in October. The only doubt for the match in Baku on 20 November is Newcastle striker Craig Bellamy, who has had further troubles with his knee injury. Both Wales and Newcastle will monitor Bellamy's fitness over the next fortnight before making a decision on whether he should make the long trip. Bellamy flew to America last week to see a knee specialist, Dr Richard Steadman, who recommended that the striker play no more than one game a week. Hughes wants his squad to assemble on Saturday 16 November before the Euro 2004 qualifier. Several Premiership clubs have matches on Sunday 17 November, but Fifa rules state that clubs must release selected players four days before competitive international matches. Birmingham City, in particular, are fighting against the decision to call up Robbie Savage, claiming that the match is not on an official competitive date. Blues president David Sullivan wrote to the Football Association of Wales last week threatening legal action over the decision. That means Savage would miss Birmingham's match against Fulham on that Sunday. Full Wales squad: Goalkeepers: Paul Jones (Southampton), Mark Crossley (Middlesbrough), Darren Ward (Nottm Forest). |
