Kenny Dalglish disagrees with former team-mate Willie Miller |
Scotland legend Kenny Dalglish insists that Berti Vogts should not be sacked if the national side lose their fourth game in a row. Denmark will be difficult opponents in Wednesday's friendly.
And Dalglish said: "A result would do everyone's confidence a world of good, but it is not drastic if you lose as long as there are encouraging signs.
"Berti Vogts has a difficult job and needs more time than some people seem prepared to give him."
Dalglish's former international team-mate, Willie Miller, at the weekend called for Vogts to be sacked immediately.
But Dalglish thought that the German could only be judged once the World Cup qualifying campaign is finished and the former Celtic and Liverpool striker and manager urged all Scots to give him their backing.
Vogts was also given some words of encouragement from Denmark manager Morten Olsen. "We played them nearly two years ago and it is a better team now than they had then," he said.
"Berti Vogts has done a good job. They reached the play-offs and, although they lost to Holland over two games, it is very hard to beat such a world-class team and Scotland did well to win one of them."
Olsen stressed, however, that his own side would be particularly motivated to beat the Scots, who have been hit by eight injury call-offs.
"It is a friendly, but we lost our last game against Spain and we are not a team that loses often and it is very important for our confidence that we win the next one," he said.
Vogts once more insisted that his side have an excellent chance of reaching the World Cup finals in Germany, despite being drawn a difficult group without any of the established minnows of European football. However, he stressed: "I have a lot of new young faces in the squad and they need time. You can't build a house in one year. You need a lot of time.
"I have a contract to 2006 and then we will have another talk about my future."
Scotland lost 1-0 to Denmark in that last meeting at Hampden and Wednesday's hosts, preparing for the Euro 2004 finals, are presently ranked 14th in the world.
"It is one of the hardest places to go and is one of the last preparation matches for the Danes for Euro 2004," added Vogts.
"It will be a good lesson for us. I am missing players and it will not be easy, but it is a great challenge for us."
