Hutchison returns for Scots

West Ham United forward Don Hutchison will make his return to international football in Scotland's friendly with Republic of Ireland on Wednesday.

Hutchison spent 10 months on the sidelines with a serious cruciate ligament injury.

Berti Vogts wants him to partner Stevie Crawford in the Euro 2004 qualifier against Iceland in place of the suspended Steven Thompson.

And the game at Hampden Park will provide the perfect opportunity for the 32-year-old striker to establish an understanding with the Dunfermline man.

Hutchison's appearance as a late substitute for the Hammers on Saturday was just his fourth outing this season.

"It's great to be back and I'm over the moon to be called up," said Hutchison.

"I want to play as many games as I can because I've got a lot to prove.

"I've been fit for quite a while, three or four months so I feel ready to play even if it is a heavy pitch at Hampden.

"I've never played under Berti before so I know that I have to try to impress him and deliver the goods for him."

Vogts also said he would play Old Firm duo Paul Lambert and Barry Ferguson in the centre of his midfield.

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Neil Sullivan and Dundee United's Paul Gallacher will get one half each.

Present first choice Rab Douglas was due to join the Scotland squad after playing in Celtic's Under-21 match against Dundee on Monday night.

However, he came off after 30 minutes having felt a tightness to the injury that had kept him out of competitive action since Boxing Day and forces a double hernia operation.
