| | Wednesday, 6 November, 2002, 06:31 GMT O'Leary rules out Republic  O'Leary wants to return to club management David O'Leary has ruled himself out of the running to replace Mick McCarthy as Republic of Ireland manager. Former Ireland defender O'Leary has been out of work since being sacked by Leeds this summer.
He was immediately installed as one of the favourites to coach his country after McCarthy decided to step down as Republic boss on Tuesday. But O'Leary insists he has no intention of moving into international management at this stage in his career. "I would love to manage my country one day but if the Football Association of Ireland were to approach me now I would have to decline," he told BBC Radio Five Live. "I am flattered that the bookmakers have made me favourite. "But I want to get back into mainstream, day-to-day football management and I would really like to be involved in that again first. "When I have got that out of my system, then I hope the FAI will come and ask me, but that will not for many years to come.
"I would like to finish my football management career off by managing the national team." McCarthy's decision to resign as Republic boss has left a void that the will need to be filled quickly. Ireland have made a bad start to their European Championship qualifying campaign with two straight defeats. Bryan Robson, John Aldridge and Joe Kinnear have all been touted as possible replacements. But the FAI could opt to follow England's lead and appoint an experienced foreign coach to get Ireland's Euro 2004 bid back on track. | |
