Southgate back for England

Arsenal's Campbell withdrew from the squad to face Portugal in Wednesday's friendly, joining fellow absentees Rio Ferdinand and Jonathan Woodgate.

The 23-year-old King has made two substitute appearances for England.

"He's strong and skilful and can play in many positions. It will be good to have him with us," coach Sven-Goran Eriksson told the FA's website.

"Ledley is another good young player that we have. I have seen him play several times this season."

King, who has been used as a defensive midfielder for Tottenham this season, made his England debut as a second-half sub against Italy in March 2002.

The former Under-21 international's last appearance for the senior side was in the 3-1 defeat against Australia last February.

Eriksson has previously turned to Birmingham's Matthew Upson and King's Spurs team-mate Anthony Gardner, but both players have suffered from injury problems of their own recently.

Campbell played the full 90 minutes in Arsenal's 2-1 FA Cup victory over Chelsea on Sunday despite suffering from a groin injury.

And Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger earlier confirmed Campbell would miss the trip.

"I've got a lot of sympathy for Sven-Goran Eriksson but Sol has chronic inflammation of his groin and it's important to get him in good shape.

"I didn't want to play him against Chelsea.

Woodgate ruled out

"But he was good because he loves to win and the FA Cup is special, particularly for English players."

Eriksson is without his preferred central-defensive partnership of Campbell and Ferdinand, who is suspended from international duty.

Newcastle's Woodgate is also ruled out with a groin injury.

It means recalled Middlesbrough defender Gareth Southgate is likely to get his chance in Faro alongside Chelsea's John Terry.
