Middlesbrough defender Gareth Southgate has been recalled to the England squad for Wednesday's friendly in Portugal. Darius Vassell and Alan Smith are both included in attack with Southampton's James Beattie missing out.
Liverpool keeper Chris Kirkland and defender Jamie Carragher are included, but there is no place for Celtic midfielder Alan Thompson.
Glen Johnson, Danny Murphy, Scott Parker, Gary Neville and Matthew Upson, have all been left out.
Eriksson revealed on BBC's Breakfast With Frost that Smith's inclusion fulfils a promise he made to the Leeds striker.
Smith was included in the England squad for the friendly against Denmark, only to be embarrassingly dropped when he was arrested for the bottle throwing incident at Elland Road, for which no police charges arose.
Eriksson said: "After what happened last time I promised he would be in the squad this time.
"He deserves it because he is playing very well."
As expected, Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard was left out as his girlfriend is about to give birth to their first child.
Manchester United defender Gary Neville, sent off in Saturday's FA Cup fifth-round win over Manchester City, was omitted because of a thigh injury, while Sol Campbell is a doubt because of a groin problem.
Youngsters Jermaine Jenas and Joe Cole bolster the midfield, alongside established stars such as captain David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Frank Lampard.
West Ham boss Alan Pardew had earlier claimed that former Hammers striker Jermain Defoe had been given a senior call-up, but that proved to be incorrect.
Eriksson revealed that Chelsea defender John Terry and Newcastle's Jonathan Woodgate are vying for a starting role in the centre of defence at Euro 2004.
Discussing who partners Sol Campbell in the absence of Rio Ferdinand, he said: "It's a race between Terry and Woodgate to show me who's going to play there.
"There will be others as well, but it's going to be one of those two.
"It's a pity Woodgate is injured. He's very unlucky. He's doing very well but every time we play, he is injured."
