Beckham led England to victory against Croatia |
Sven-Goran Eriksson will not have to invoke the controversial four-day rule to secure captain David Beckham's release to join England's squad for the Euro 2004 qualifier in Macedonia. Real Madrid have brought their Primera Liga match against Villareal forward 24 hours to Tuesday - ending a potential club-versus-country conflict involving the 25m star.
Real's second Primera Liga match was originally scheduled to take place next Wednesday - just 24 hours before England are due to fly out to Macedonia.
Eriksson had spoken to his Real Madrid counterpart Carlos Queiroz in a bid to resolve the issue.
Under Fifa rules the Football Association could have requested Beckham's release four days before the international match on 6 September, meaning he would miss out for his club.
However, with Zidane, Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos also required for international matches next week, Real have obtained clearance with the Spanish League to move the match forward.
Beckham is now expected to join up with the rest of the England party on Wednesday morning, averting the need for him to fly independently to Macedonia.
FA head of media Adrian Bevington said: "We are delighted that the game has been moved to the Tuesday night and we look forward to David Beckham joining the rest of the squad on the Wednesday lunchtime for training.
"We can confirm that Sven-Goran Eriksson has had conversations with both David Beckham and Carlos Queiroz in the past 24 hours.
"As we had stated, it was always our intention to achieve an appropriate outcome without invoking Fifa regulations on the release of players.
"A number of countries were involved in this instance, including France and Brazil, and we are happy that this conclusion allows David to play for both Real Madrid and England."
Beckham, meanwhile, marked his first match at the Bernabeu with a headed goal after 73 minutes of the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup on Wednesday.
He scored in Real's 3-0 win against Real Mallorca, to give them a 4-2 aggregate victory.
