Uefa have taken a dim view over the pitch invasions |
The Football Association has delayed selling tickets for England's Euro 2004 qualifier against Slovakia in case the game is played behind closed doors. The two sides are due to meet at the Riverside Stadium on 11 June.
But football governing body Uefa will hold a disciplinary hearing on 1 May over claims of racist abuse and pitch invasions in the recent qualifier against Turkey.
England and the FA could be punished by having the game played in front of empty stands.
A statement from the FA on its official website said: "The sale of tickets for the forthcoming match between England versus Slovakia on 11 June at Middlesbrough has been delayed.
We do believe there is a serious case to answer |
"Further details will be announced in due course. Tickets for the match against Serbia & Montenegro on 3 June 2003 will go on sale as previously announced."
No official reason has been given for the delay in selling tickets but sources at FA headquarters revealed they were reluctant to put any tickets up for sale until any Uefa punishment is announced.
Uefa launched disciplinary proceedings following an official complaint from the Turkish FA.
Slovakia have already been forced to play a game in an empty stadium as punishment for their supporters racially abusing England players last October.
But Uefa's Mike Lee insisted England would not necessarily face the same punishment.
He said: "I cannot make any predictions about this current case but we do believe there is a serious case to answer."
