Uefa extends FA deadline
The Stadium of Light game was heavily policed
Turkey lodged an official complaint to Uefa

Uefa has extended the Football Association's deadline to reply to disciplinary charges following crowd disturbances at England's clash with Turkey.

England face the threat of being forced to play their next European Championship qualifier, against Slovakia, behind closed doors after Uefa charged the FA over racist abuse and pitch invasions during the Turkey game.

A decision will now be made on 1 May.

The FA originally had until 21 April to submit their response but now have an extra four days to state their case.

England's victory over Turkey was marred by several pitch invasions.

There were also ugly exchanges between several of the players after England secured victory with two late goals from substitute Darius Vassell and a David Beckham penalty.

Uefa's disciplinary body have already punished Slovakia this season for racist abuse of England fans by making them play one game in an empty stadium.

The European governing body's communications director Mike Lee said it was not automatic England would receive the same punishment as Slovakia.

"We do believe there is a serious case to answer," he said.

We totally condemn any racist chanting whatsoever - we won't put up with it
FA marketing director Paul Barber

"(But) you cannot compare cases, you have to deal with them individually, look at their track record, what occurred and whether it was inside or outside the stadium, and what was the scale of the incident."

There were 105 arrests by police in Sunderland, most of them taking place outside the ground.

In their defence, the FA can point to their pioneering work in combating racism in football, that the England team are often the victims of racism, and that this is a first offence.

Paul Barber, the FA's marketing and communications director said he was "disappointed" that Uefa felt it necessary to bring charges.

"We are very aware of the pitch incursions on the night and disappointed by those," he added.

"We totally condemn any racist chanting whatsoever - it is unacceptable, it's extremely unkind and something we want to see the back of. We won't put up with it."

Disciplinary proceedings have also been instigated against the Turkish FA for the improper conduct of players in the tunnel after the match and they will also be dealt with on 1 May.
