A first call-up for Terry |
Sven-Goran Eriksson has included Everton's teenage striker Wayne Rooney in his 25-man squad for England's Euro 2004 qualifying double header against Liechtenstein and Turkey. The England coach kept faith with the teenage star after calling him up for the first time against Australia, but there was no place for the Premiership's leading goalscorer, Southampton's James Beattie.
Liverpool pair Michael Owen and Emile Heskey are also joined by Arsenal's Francis Jeffers and Darius Vassell of Aston Villa.
Other than Rooney, Newcastle midfielder Jermaine Jenas was the only one of Eriksson's new faces from the Australia squad to keep his place in the Euro 2004 squad.
But there was a first call for Chelsea defender John Terry, who has been hugely impressive at the heart of Claudio Ranieri's defence this season.

Newcastle team-mate Jonathan Woodgate also won a recall to the England fold. As expected, Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman was not fit for selection. David James is Eriksson's number one pick, with Leeds' Paul Robinson and Seaman's former Arsenal understudy Richard Wright also included.
Eriksson had previously indicated he did not feel Rooney was starting enough games to be selected for the senior England squad.
But the England coach was at Highbury to see the young striker score a superb goal in Everton's 2-1 defeat against Arsenal and was clearly swayed by what he saw.
But there was no place in the squad for Joe Cole for the games in Vaduz on 29 March and against Turkey at Sunderland's Stadium of Light on 2 April.
There are, however, security concerns surrounding the Liechtenstein tie.
Cole had to make do with a place in the England Under-21 squad, along with Upton Park team-mate Jermain Defoe.
Aston Villa's in-form defender Gareth Barry also remains in he under-21s, despite the absence of any left-sided cover for Southampton's Wayne Bridge.
