Scotland manager George Burley has challenged his side to embark on a winning run ahead of the European Championship campaign.

The Scots face Wales in a friendly on Saturday and Burley wants a good display at the Cardiff City Stadium.

"We're looking to win the game and put on a good performance," he said.

"We only have four games between now and the next Euros. We're going to have a healthy support, as we always do from the Tartan Army."

Burley, who is looking for his side to halt a run of four consecutive games without a goal, said he expected Wales to provide a stern test.

"I think it will be a great game," said Burley. "I've been to the stadium before and I was here when it was opened against Celtic.

"I feel there's a great spirit in the squad. They're desperate to play and everyone's willing to take part.

"It's encouraging for me, as national coach, to have a few options to start and a lot of good players on the bench; a lot wanting to play for their country."

Meanwhile, Scotland captain Darren Fletcher says Burley wants the side to be become more adventurous but difficult to beat.

"He wants us to be more expansive, he wants us to get the ball down and play in the right way," said Fletcher.

"Not gung-ho, we have to be hard to beat, disciplined and hard to break down.

"But we've got players who can play football. That's the thing I've noticed about the squad, that we've got a lot more technically-gifted players, players who can do something, players who can win a match."

Burley has hinted that he is looking for the ideal strike partner for James McFadden, but the player himself would not mind playing a similar role to the one he has been handed at his club Birmingham City.

"I have been playing wide left and enjoying my football, but I will play anywhere," said the forward who has scored some important goals for his country.

McFadden believes that the Scotland players will take to the Cardiff City Stadium against a Wales side depleted by injury determined to prove a point after a disappointing World Cup campaign.

"The last two campaigns have been wasted opportunities and not because of the standard of opposition as there are no minnows in international football," he said.

"We let ourselves down because at times we did not play the best we could have.

"We are all getting older and we are determined to prove that we are good enough to get to a major finals."

Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall is poised to start for Scotland on his club ground in the absence of the injured Craig Gordon.
