Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni believes Robbie Keane's late equaliser gave them a deserved point away to world champions Italy.
"The Italian defenders are the best in the world and it was difficult to create opportunities to score," Trapattoni said after the 1-1 draw.
"I made changes and we achieved the goal. I think we deserved not to lose.
"It was an emotional game for me. I am Italian and I wanted to show the people here that Ireland are a good team."
Goalscorer Keane felt Ireland were rewarded for their perseverance.
"Conceding a sloppy goal against 10 men was disappointing but full credit to the lads who kept going.
"We tried to play, but sometimes route one is an option that is how we scored.
"Overall we have to be pleased because we showed a lot of character. Sometimes it is not easy playing against 10 men."
