Robbie Savage won 39 Wales caps between 1995 and 2005

Former Wales international Robbie Savage is predicting John Toshack's young team will be "hammered" by Germany on Wednesday.

The Welsh FA has sold just 20,000 for the 2010 World Cup qualifier at the Millennium Stadium as Toshack admits their qualifying dreams are over.

Savage said: "Does the crowd really want to see lower division players playing for their country?

"I'm expecting Wales, low on confidence, to get hammered."

The former Wales star is not the biggest supporter of Toshack after the veteran Wales manager dropped Savage when he was captain of Premier League side Blackburn Rovers.

Savage immediately retired from international football but later admitted his decision was a little hasty as he "threw his toys out of the pram."

But the Derby County midfielder continues to be an outspoken critic of Toshack, whose team fell to a 2-0 defeat to Finland at the Millennium Stadium in front of 22,602 fans.

"There were more at Leeds on Saturday than watching Wales," said Savage.

"Games against Germany usually take care of themselves, you can have all the adrenalin in the world but the quality usually shines through."

Football Association of Wales secretary general David Collins admitted they would like to see the number of spectators increase, as Germany are one of the best sides in the world.

"But prior to the Millennium Stadium being built, the crowd of 22,602 we had for Finland on Saturday would have been the biggest crowd for a Wales game for 20 years - so you have to consider that," Collins added.

Current Welsh midfielder David Edwards insisted Wales' players could lift themselves on Wednesday.

But the 23-year-old Wolverhampton Wanderers player admitted it would be a "massive task."

He said: "It won't be difficult to lift ourselves, when you are playing against the Germans. If you are not up for it there is something wrong with you.

"They are the sort of games you just love to be involved in.

"If you can't get motivated, you don't want to win enough, and haven't got the passion for it there is something wrong.

"We must try to get some confidence from somewhere and try to get a better result.

"Since I have been playing we always seem to do better against the bigger teams.

"We just have to go for it, there is nothing to lose now.

"We need wins and we just have to go for it. That might give us a little bit of freedom.

"Let's just get at them and maybe they will have an off-day and we can win."
